LOW BACK PAIN...ANSWERS Never actually realizing that I had a herniated disc in my lumbar spine until getting out of bed and walking were almost too painful to bear, mine is a story that begins just after they slid me into an MRI machine...First, I was off to a specialist who told me that while I might be only twenty-three I certainly looked like I had the back of a forty year-old. This was followed by, "well, you're definitely going to have to look at what you want to do for a living because there are certain things that are just out of the question..." My next stop was to a world-renowned back surgeon who makes a living off the bulging and herniated discs of pro athletes. Yet, the surgery he would propose was, by his own admission, so risky it would be foolish to even try it. So they stuck me in physical therapy. Two-to-three times a week for months and months I rolled on towels, I rolled on balls, I stretched and was stretched, but it was all to no avail...Frayed and tired I was at the end of my rope... In my first week (of chiropractic care)I received three adjustments and immediately felt incrementally better. I cannot underscore this enough, remember I had been in physical therapy for months, yet after only one week of adjustments I was seeing major improvement. Suffice it to say that my back has only gotten better. Currently I receive an adjustment once a month or so and have minor back soreness maybe four or five days out of the month. I don't know the stories of others, but I thought you might want to know exactly what it took for one person to find something that has changed their life. --Teresa P.—Insurance Agent If you're reading this, you probably have low back pain, seen more than one doctor, and still haven't found an answer.
If your condition was simple, any of the treatments would have worked; BUT, sometimes the problem isn't simple. You start to worry that you'll never be pain free again. Will you ever be able to play golf, run, lift weights or just sit without pain again?
Medication, injections and surgery have been recommended, but they have serious side effects and don't fix the problem.
WELL, WHAT DO I DO? (read on for the details...)
Let's first look at the CAUSES of low back pain:
The facets (the parts of the spine that connect to one another) "jam" into each other. Patients often find their back pain is relieved by bringing their knees to their chest and is worsened by prolonged standing or wearing high heeled shoes.
- The discs can herniate into the spinal nerves or spinal canal and causes severe, sharp pain to the back or leg. Bending forward and sitting increases the pain.
- About 5-10% of us have uneven leg lengths causing the spine to wear unevenly. It is nearly always misdiagnosed and leads to chronic pain and "instability."
- Misalignment of the sacroiliac or lumbar vertebrae is a common cause of low back pain that is usually mistreated by the medical community.
Of course these aren't the only causes of back pain, just the more common ones we see in our clinic.
Our center specializes in getting to the bottom of the difficult cases (even those with unsuccessful surgery).
We treat the problem, not just the symptoms! Most patients see significant improvement within two weeks.
